❓ FAQ

Both are Mopar oil filters for the same Cummins application. 5083285AA, also sold as MO-285, is the current number; 5016547AA, 5016547AB and 5016547AC are the earlier numbers it supersedes. This filter replaces all of them.

Yes. The 5.9L B-series and the 6.7L Cummins in Ram 2500 through 5500 trucks use the same spin-on oil filter body with a 1″-16 UNF thread, so one part number covers the 1989-2007 5.9L and the 2007.5-2024 6.7L applications.

Every 7,500 miles (12,000 km) under normal duty, together with the engine oil. Shorten the interval under heavy towing, frequent idling or dusty conditions, and always follow the owner's manual.

The filter thread is 1″-16 UNF. Lubricate the gasket with clean engine oil, screw the filter on by hand until the gasket contacts the housing, then tighten three-quarters to one full turn further. Do not use a wrench to tighten it.

Diesel oil turns black almost immediately from soot, so colour is not the indicator. Go by mileage, or by a drop in oil pressure at idle, louder valve train noise on cold start, or a canister that stays cool while the engine is at operating temperature.

Description

Product Overview

The 5083285AA oil filter is the spin-on engine oil filter for the Dodge Ram 2500 and 3500 with the 5.9L Cummins diesel (1989-2007) and for the Ram 2500, 3500, 4500 and 5500 with the 6.7L Cummins turbo diesel (2007.5-2024). It threads onto the factory oil filter housing with a 1″-16 UNF thread, is rated at 25 micron nominal, and replaces Mopar 5083285AA, which is also sold as MO-285. One stock number covers both Cummins engine families, so a mixed fleet of 5.9L and 6.7L Ram trucks is serviced from a single filter.

Key Features

One filter, two engine families — the same spin-on body is specified for the 5.9L B-series and the 6.7L Cummins in Ram 2500 through 5500 trucks
25 micron nominal rating — the media is rated at 25 micron nominal to hold soot and wear debris out of the oil between services
Sized for high-soot diesel oil — diesel oil carries far more soot than gasoline engine oil, and the element is built for that loading rather than for a lighter-duty application
1″-16 UNF thread — the body threads straight onto the factory housing without an adapter or a thread insert
Fluted canister — the faceted dome end takes a standard end-cap filter wrench, so the filter can be removed from underneath the truck
Sealing gasket pre-installed — the gasket is supplied on the filter, so the old one is not reused and no separate seal has to be ordered
