❓ FAQ

Engine bay. The 6.7L Cummins runs two fuel filters, and this kit covers the upper cartridge that sits on the engine side and seals under the 28 mm cap. The second filter is the water separator on the frame rail and is a different part, ordered separately.

The 2011-2024 Ram 2500, 3500, 4500 and 5500 with the 6.7L Cummins, plus the 2010 Dodge Ram 2500 and 3500 Pickup and the 2010 Dodge Ram 4000, 4500 and 5000 with the 6.7L diesel.

The cap is what holds the seal under 30.5 Nm, and the original plastic one cracks at the hex or across the thread after years of heat cycles. Once it cracks it cannot hold that torque, and diesel weeps onto the housing. A billet body keeps its shape and its corners, so the O-ring stays compressed squarely.

A 28 mm socket at 30.5 Nm (22.5 lb-ft); some guides quote 30 Nm, so treat 30.5 as the figure and never chase a seep by over-torquing. The O-ring comes with the filter, not with the cap, so fit the new ring that is in the box and reuse the old one only in an emergency.

Do not start straight after the change. Switch the ignition to RUN for 30 seconds, off, and repeat seven to ten times until the pump stops gurgling, then start and reset the fuel filter life in the EVIC menu. The box holds one filter with its O-ring and one billet aluminium cap, covered by 90 days against manufacturing defects.

Description

Product Overview

The 6.7L Cummins runs two fuel filters and this kit covers the one in the engine bay. Inside the box are the 68157291AA cartridge with its O-ring and a 68065612AA housing cap machined from 6061-T6 billet and gold anodised. The element is the upper filter: it seats in the housing on the engine side and seals under the cap you take off with a 28 mm socket. The other filter sits on the frame rail and is ordered separately, which is the source of most confusion on this engine.

Pairing the cap with the element is the point of the kit. The original cap is moulded plastic and it lives under 30.5 Nm of clamp load in a housing that cycles hot and cold with every drive. It cracks at the hex or across the thread, and once it does, diesel weeps onto the housing and the smell comes through the vents. A machined billet body holds that torque without taking a set, so the O-ring is compressed by a cap that is still round and flat rather than one that has bellied out.

Filtration is two layers in one cartridge. The inner paper is rated at 5 microns and catches the grit that scores a CP4.2 plunger; the outer micro-fiber layer coalesces water so the separator can drop it out instead of pushing it through to the injectors.

Key Features

6061-T6 billet cap, gold anodised — Machined from solid stock rather than moulded, so there is no seam to split and no porosity to weep. The anodised layer is a hard oxide that resists diesel and the heat cycling of an engine bay.
28 mm hex, the factory size — The hex is cut into the body at the same across-flats as the original, so the socket you already own fits. No adapter, no strap wrench, and the corners do not round off after the third service.
5 micron inner paper layer — Fine enough to hold the particles that damage the high-pressure pump and the injector nozzles, and the media is pleated to keep pressure drop low as it loads.
Outer micro-fiber water layer — Coalesces dispersed water into droplets large enough for the housing separator to catch, so water leaves through the drain instead of reaching the fuel rail.
Oval alignment key — The base of the cartridge has an oval key that only sits one way in the housing recess. Push down and turn slightly until it clicks, and the element is seated without guessing.
One kit, both halves — Cartridge, O-ring and cap in the same box, so a service does not stop because the old cap was found cracked on the bench.
A plastic cap cracked at the hex — The original cap is the part that fails first on this engine. Over-torquing to chase a seep cracks it, and then it cannot hold 30.5 Nm at all. A billet body closes that path instead of repeating it.
A reused O-ring letting air in — A hardened ring does not just leak diesel out; it lets air in, and air in a CP4.2 makes the engine crank long and idle rough. A new ring comes with the filter.
Air left in the system after a change — Starting straight after a filter change runs the pump dry. Cycle the ignition to RUN for 30 seconds, off, and repeat seven to ten times until the gurgling stops, then start.
Servicing only the frame-rail filter — The engine-bay element is the one that protects the pump most directly, and it is the one most often skipped because it sits under a cap rather than in a bowl.
