6.7L Powerstroke Oil Change: FL2051S Filter, 13-Quart Capacity and Torque Specs

The 13-quart system

The 6.7L Powerstroke oil circuit holds 13 quarts — one of the larger sumps in the light-truck class, and the reason this service needs a 15-quart drain pan rather than the usual 8. The extra volume is not a safety margin; it is what the turbo feed and the high-pressure pump circuit need.

The filter: FL2051S cartridge

The FL2051S is a cartridge, not a spin-on can. It sits in a plastic housing on top of the engine, driver side, behind the alternator, sealed by a cap with a 24mm hex moulded into it. It replaces Ford BC3Z-6731-B and fits every 6.7L Scorpion from 2011 through 2022 with the same housing and the same procedure.

Media quality is where budget cartridges give themselves away. A synthetic-blend element holds its pleats when oil temperature passes 220°F under a loaded pull; a paper element swells, collapses and sends media downstream.

Tools and supplies

  • 16mm socket — drain plug
  • 24mm socket or dedicated housing wrench
  • 6-inch extension and 3/8 in ratchet
  • 15-quart drain pan
  • Torque wrench in both in-lb and ft-lb
  • New 16mm drain plug crush washer
  • FL2051S cartridge — both cap O-rings included
  • 13 quarts of 5W-40 full synthetic, API CK-4

Procedure

  1. Warm the engine to roughly 100–120°F. Warm oil drains faster and carries more soot out.
  2. The drain plug is on the pan, passenger side — 16mm. Expect a fast, wide stream.
  3. Drain for 10 minutes, fit a new crush washer and torque the plug to 20 ft-lb. More than that and the pan threads are gone.
  4. Open the 24mm cap on top of the engine. The old cartridge clips to the centre stem and comes out with the cap.
  5. Replace both O-rings — the large one on the cap threads and the small one on the stem. This is the step that causes most post-service leaks.
  6. Film clean oil on the new O-rings, clip the new cartridge to the stem and seat the assembly.
  7. Torque the cap to 18 ft-lb (216 in-lb). Without a torque wrench: hand-tight then half a turn — the housing is plastic and the threads will strip.
  8. Add 12 quarts, idle 30 seconds, shut off, wait two minutes, then bring the level up on the dipstick.

Oil and torque specs

Capacity with filter — 13 quarts / 12.3 L
Oil — 5W-40 full synthetic, API CK-4
Filter — FL2051S / Ford BC3Z-6731-B
Filter cap — 24mm hex, 18 ft-lb / 216 in-lb
Drain plug — 16mm, 20 ft-lb
Interval — 7,500 mi severe service, 10,000 mi highway

Where this service goes wrong

  • Overfilling. The housing holds about half a quart. Drain incompletely, add 13 quarts, and the crank aerates the oil — and aerated oil does not lubricate bearings.
  • Reusing the cap O-rings. The large ring heat-cycles flat, loses its crush and weeps oil down the housing. It reads as a valve-cover leak.
  • Gasoline-spec oil. A CK-4 diesel oil carries the anti-foam, anti-wear and soot-dispersant package the turbo and high-pressure pump need; an SN/SP gasoline oil does not.
  • Stripping the cap. A 24mm socket and a ratchet reaches 40 ft-lb without effort. The cap cracks around 35.
