FL2016 Oil Filter and EC781 Cap Kit Ford 6.0L 6.4L Powerstroke

Oil FiltersCE / ISO 9001

The oil filter service for the Ford 6.0L and 6.4L Powerstroke as a set: the FL2016 cartridge, a new EC781 plastic cap and two O-rings. Replacing the cap with the element is what stops the seep that starts at a hardened cap ring, and the cap is supplied in the same plastic as the factory part so it torques to the housing the way it was designed.

❓ FAQ

Not on every service, but the cap is the part that fails first on these engines. It is plastic and lives in heat and oil vapour, and after eight to ten years it goes brittle and cracks at the hex or along a thread flank. If yours is dry and the groove is clean, the cap in this kit will last as long as the next one. If it is weeping, cracked, or the threads are chewed from a previous over-torque, changing it with the element saves a second strip-down.

The widest fitment of the group: 2003-2007 F-250 to F-550 Super Duty with the 6.0L, the same trucks 2008-2010 with the 6.4L, the E-350 and E-450 Super Duty 2004-2010, the E-350 Club Wagon 2004-2005, the Excursion 2003-2005 and the LCF 4.5L V6 2006-2009. The F-650 and F-750 are not on this list; they use a separately listed cap.

One seals the cap in its groove, and the second is a spare for the element stem. The ring is what hardens first and it is also the cheapest part of the job to get wrong, so a spare means the service does not stop because a seal tore on assembly or came out of the box damaged. Lubricate whichever you fit with clean engine oil and seat it without twisting.

The listing for this kit quotes 3,000 to 5,000 miles. The factory manual for the 6.0L gives 7,500 miles in normal service and 5,000 in severe service, counting towing, heavy loads, dust and a lot of short cold starts as severe. Use the manual figure that matches your duty cycle, and if in doubt go with the shorter one; a cartridge is cheap next to the high-pressure oil pump that fires the injectors.

One EC781 plastic cap, one FL2016 oil filter cartridge and two O-rings. The set is covered for 90 days against manufacturing defects, which covers a cracked moulding, a damaged thread, a collapsed filter medium and valve failure. Every batch is checked for thread form, hex fit, groove depth, pleat count and valve operation before it is packed.

Description

Product Overview

This set covers one oil filter service on the Ford 6.0L and 6.4L Powerstroke V8 and it covers the part most services skip: the cap. You get the FL2016 cartridge, a new EC781 cap moulded in the same plastic as the factory part, and two O-rings.

Changing the cap with the element is worth doing because the seal is what usually fails. The cap lives in heat and oil vapour for a decade, the ring hardens and takes a set, and the first sign is a diesel smell and a damp patch on the housing a week after the filter was changed. A new ring fixes that only if the cap's groove is still true, which is why the two ship together. The fitment here covers the wide range: the F-250 to F-550 Super Duty in 6.0L and 6.4L, the E-350 and E-450 vans, the Excursion and the LCF 4.5L.

Key Features

Cap and element together — Both halves of the service in one box. Buying the cartridge and leaving a tired cap in place is how a fresh filter ends up weeping within a week.
Same plastic as the factory cap — Moulded in the plastic grade the original uses, with the same wall thickness, so it seats and torques to the housing as designed. No thread mismatch and no interference with the element.
Two O-rings supplied — One for the cap groove, one spare for the element stem. The ring is the part that hardens first, and having two means the service does not stop for a seal.
98% abrasive capture — Carbon, sand, dust and metal particles are held in the FL2016 media rather than circulating to the bearings and to the high-pressure oil pump that fires the HEUI injectors.
Pressure-relief and anti-drain-back valves — The relief valve opens instead of letting the pump crush a clogged element, and the drain-back valve keeps oil in the galleries so the top end is not dry on a cold start.
1-3/8 in (35 mm) socket — The hex is moulded into the cap, so a standard socket removes it. No strap wrench on a plastic body and nothing else has to be unbolted.
A cracked cap weeping oil — The factory cap is plastic and lives in heat. When it cracks at the hex or along a thread flank, oil weeps onto the housing and down the bellhousing. A sound cap stops the leak at its source rather than at the rag.
A hardened O-ring after a service — Reusing the old ring is the usual reason a 6.0L smells of oil after a filter change. The rubber takes a set and seeps. Two new rings are in this set.
Over-torquing the housing — The cap is plastic and the housing is thin. Past 25 Nm the housing lip cracks and then no cap seals. The correct figure is on the specification list, reached by hand first and then with a torque wrench.
Buying an aluminium cap for a stock engine — Billet caps exist for modified trucks. On a stock engine the housing was machined for the plastic cap, and plastic does not conduct heat into the oil the way metal does.
